Our teacher Ms Mkhabela and our Water Explorer team have noted that much of the food we eat comes in plastic, especially the items we buy from our tuckshop ladies which is causing damage to our environment. We have now banned all plastics wrapped foods at school.
After buying snacks from the tuckshop ladies much of which comes wrapped in plastics, it all ends up all over the school and in our wetland. This doesnt only litter the school but also has a negative effect on the environment. The plastics end up in the stream and the wetlands and eventually enter our rivesr and end up in the sea. In the sea there are a variety of animals that see plastics and microbeads as food, they end up eating them and dying. The ones on the land take years to decay as they arent biodegradable. The school has stopped the children from eating and buying plastic wrapped foods while at school, they are instead bringing lunchboxes that can then be filled with their own food or food from the tuck shop ladies that is now not wrapped in plastic.. This will not only make the school neat and clean but will reduce the risks of our animals dying and we can help to reduce water and land pollution.
